Some time back, I came across this song for another project. The song is "Kings and Queens" from 30 Seconds to Mars. I became horribly addicted to it. However recently, I noticed how similar or how well it fit into the Highlander Universe (well to me that is).
We were the kings and queens of promise, We were the victims of ourselves, Maybe the children of a lesser God, Between Heaven and Hell.
A pet theory of mine is that I'm of the belief that the origins of Immortals come from the so-called demigods, the kings and queens of ancient times. Sons and daughters of powerful immortal beings. I see this song as describing the lives of these "kings and queens of promise", these "princes", leading up to "the age of man is over", the Gathering.
"We were the victims of ourselves" The gods and demigods of legend rebelled against the creator gods and mated with mortals, causing their own woes and the resulting offspring was "Maybe the children of a lesser god", the demigods of yesteryear. They are here on this mortal plain "Between Heaven and Hell".
"Into your eyes, Hopeless and taken, We stole our new lives, Through blood and name, In defense of our dreams"
"We stole our new lives" reminds me of Conner being Russel Nash, how he stole the live of a dead infant. However, maybe they are stealing the lives of mortals by taking the place of a mortal born.
"Through blood and name" and "In defense of our dreams". The Game requires blood through the decapitation of each other and The Kurgan told Kim that "tradition is all we have" which they only have dreams to live by.
"The age of man is over, A darkness comes at dawn, These lessons that we've learned here, Have only just begun"
After almost 35 years, I still think that Conner has more power than what is said or implied. However, if apocalyptic futures like in Highlander 2, The Source, The Search For Vengeance, or even the Animated Series, a darkness truly comes at dawn. How much power does it take to even corrupt the most innocent soul. Like Conner said “I have the power! The quickening that empowers me! I feel everything! I know everything! I am everything!”, has he become like a god, "knowing good from evil"?
Regardless, I can see the Kurgan (or for that matter the Four Horsemen, Kell, Kane) living in this verse, the age of man is over, a darkness comes at dawn. "If [the Kurgan] wins The Prize mortal man would suffer an eternity of darkness." - Ramirez to Conner

The lyrics and a link to the video are below. Remember, this is just my speculation. It's not official and no way represents either what the song meant or whatever Highlander means.
Lyrics:
Into the night
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken.
We were the kings and queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell,
Heaven and Hell.
Into your eyes
Hopeless and taken
We stole our new lives
Through blood and name
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams
The age of man is over
A darkness comes at dawn
These lessons that we've learned here
Have only just begun
We are the kings
We are the queens
We are the kings
We are the queens
Into the night
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken.
We were the kings and queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell,
Heaven and Hell.
Into your eyes
Hopeless and taken
We stole our new lives
Through blood and name
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams
The age of man is over
A darkness comes at dawn
These lessons that we've learned here
Have only just begun
We are the kings
We are the queens
We are the kings
We are the queens
