The The Only One There Can Be Review:

Quote:
Highlander as an anime film. This could have turned out really horribly, but instead it turned out decently, thanks to the director of Ninja Scroll being attached. Still, it's not exactly the most brilliant thing with the franchise's name on it.

Colin MacLeod (not to be confused with Connor, Duncan, or Quentin) holds a centuries-old grudge against Marcus Octavius, the Roman immortal who destroyed his Celtic clan and killed his lover. He has vainly tried countless times to wipe out Octavius, from one exotic setting to another, without any luck. Now, in a (you guessed it!) post-apocalyptic world, he will get one last chance to exact his revenge.

Marcus now controls a golden tower in the midst of NYC, where he has unleashed a virus on the resistance fighters who live in the city's ruins. A kind-hearted prostitute, a doctor who just happens to have the voice of Jim "Joe Dawson" Brynes, and a Gary Coleman-wannabe all convince Colin to help them in their mission to stop the tyranny.

The movie essentially plays as a blend of the first two live-action films, but it layers on a few Japanese animation cliches on top of them. Colin is a little too single-minded to be compelling, and the villain is far more interesting. Also, the ghost mentor who shows up a lot is rather silly and can get a bit annoying at times.

The animation is quite good, if not exactly original. The story, by the head writer of the TV series, is serviceable if conventional. The voice acting is okay, if nothing special. The sword fights and quickenings are fantastic, and the flashbacks are often impressive. It's rather respectable for Highlander, but it doesn't break any new ground as anime.

Ranking:
6/10
